What is Concrete Scanning?

It is a non-destructive test that uses pulse radar technology or radar waves to detect different objects such as rebars, tendons, metal and plastic conduits, glass-fibre cables, voids and wood embedded in different layers up to 300mm depth.

This Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology that transmits waves and reflects signals help in analyzing the subsurface and detecting embedded objects. Moreover, concrete scanning useful in inspecting concrete floors, slabs or columns before coring or drilling in renovations and new construction projects.

Why is it needed?

The risk and dangers of skipping the concrete scanning process is inevitable.

Avoiding Damage to rebars – Concrete is certainly designed with ample amount of rebars that provides strength to a structure. Without scanning, there’s no way to determine if it will be hit. Hitting rebars will cost the integrity of a structure.

Without scanning your drilling equipments may damage to post tension cables. It can cause immediate injury to workers, as well as irreparable structural damage to the post-tension slab.

Finally, there are other structural components imbeded in the concrete that may be compromised. Often, it contains electrical conduits (both plastic and metal), water lines and radiant heating lines. As a result, we are avoiding dangers of striking an electrical line include worker electrocution and power outages.
